Naming Facilities and Recognition
The naming of the District schools and other District facilities is the responsibility of the Board of Directors. Each name shall be known to, and significant to, the community. District schools and buildings may be named after persons who have attained extraordinary prominence at the local, state or national level in the fields of education, arts and sciences, athletic achievements, politics, military achievements or statesmanship. The use of names of living persons shall be avoided unless the circumstances warrant an exception. Normally facilities (examples include but not limited to library, playfield, and gymnasium) that are part of a school location are not independently named. However, the superintendent will make a recommendation to the Board if special circumstances exist that would justify an independent name for a portion of an existing facility. The Board recognizes the importance of soliciting student, staff and community input in the selection of the name.
Permanent recognition of individuals occurring within or on District facilities is the responsibility of the Board of Directors. Recognition includes but not limited to the displaying of billboards, banners, signs and the naming of score boards.
The superintendent shall develop procedures for naming schools and facilities and shall develop procedures for allowing permanent signage recognition. Permanent signage shall mean any signage intended to be displayed for more than one (1) school year. Examples of permanent signage include but are not limited to billboards, banners, signs and the naming of score boards.
